In cases of partial mandibulectomy/maxillectomy, there is frequently a previous histologic diagnosis that has led to the surgery and the primary purpose of submission is to determine completeness of excision. It is helpful to indicate which margins the surgeon is most concerned with in that regard. Colored ink, sutures, or a clear verbal description can be used to indicate to the histology technician and/or pathologist which areas to evaluate.
